What Your Dentist Wants You to Know
By Ross Hudgens
When's the last time you talked to a dentist besides in an office? If you're like most, the answer is probably "not recently" or "it's been a long time". Believe it or not, they have some things they want you to know. These things are vital for your long term dental health.
1. Gum Disease Affects Your Health - It causes tooth loss in adults and has also been linked to heart disease and strokes. However, if diagnosed early, the disease can be treated and reversed. Brush frequently, flossing, and going to your local dentist frequently are the best countermeasures against gum disease.
2. Dental Check Ups are Extremely Important - Dentists aren't saying this just because it brings them extra money - checkups are vital for your overall oral health. Regular checkups prevent numerous oral issues that can easily be prevented by visiting your dentist.
3. Brush Frequently - Seems obvious, but most people don't follow this standard. Brushing twice a day removes plaque, keeps your teeth clean and prevents gum disease.
4. Eating Right Promotes Strong Oral Health - Sugars and staining products in soft drinks and non-nutritional foods are bad for your teeth and attack tooth enamel. This will make your teeth less cosmetically appealing, and more prone to gum disease and cavities.
5. Dental Problems don't go away - Have a toothache? Brushing more won't solve the problem. Cavities don't shrink. Visit your local dentist and get it checked out before you are forced to get a root canal or have your tooth extracted - not fun.
6. Change Your Toothbrush - Toothbrushes wear out after 3 or so months and lose their effectiveness. If you have gum disease, do so more frequently because bacteria can find its way onto your bristles. Make sure you rinse your brush out with hot water after every use.
Maintaining good oral health is easy! Be disciplined, be conscious the decisions you make when eating/maintain hygiene, and you will have brilliant, sparkling whites. Ask your dentist - he'll tell you!
